Pennine and Dales Rounds 2019

Well, mixed fortunes for the BPCup again this year and all due to the great British weather. However we did have some lovely flying and, as always, a huge amount of fun.

We started the 2019 competition over the Spring Bank holiday, with HQ once again at the Bowland Forest Gliding Club. The weather forecast was not great for Parlick but Cumbria Soaring Club kindly allowed us use of their sites as further north the weather looked rather better. We travelled up to Wolf Crags on the first day and Barton Fell on the second but the strong conditions were not suitable for task setting. However all the pilots chose to free fly and enjoy the stunning Lake District views. The weekend rounded off with the now customary BBQ and social evening and thanks go to Carl Foster for sourcing the excellent supplies and Tony Blacker for all the cooking.

Our second round was booked for early August in the Dales, with HQ at The Dalesbridge campsite near Settle. Again the weather was looking less than ideal, however, the UK sometimes surprises us and it really came good to allow us one beautiful day on Wether Fell with our task a decent race to goal. Day two was too windy for flying but gave an opportunity to explore the lovely area around us either walking, cycling or climbing and finished up with a lovely meal provided by our hosts, Ami and Ross, owners of The Dalesbridge (I think we boosted the bar takings considerably too!)

Thanks to our new format of including an XC Bonus round (this allowed pilots to add a capped number of points from their UK XC league overall score to their final BPCup score) we were able to successfully score all the pilots and have decided to repeat this round again next year. Prizegiving and a very worthwhile discussion about the 2020 BPCup was held on the Sunday morning with pilots either heading homeward or staying on to enjoy the Dales, in spite of the horrible forecast.

Our plans for 2020 include a foreign round in the Spring in Algodonales, March 28th to 4th of April with competition days 29th March to 3rd April and a second round in the Dales, with HQ and camping again at The Dalesbridge, dates are 9th to 12th July. Qualifying flights for the XC bonus round will fall between these dates. Full details are being finalised now and will be on the website asap.

Last but not least, a great big thank you to our sponsors – Beeston Brewery, Cross Country Magazine, Foster Knight, Ozone Paragliders, Superdesign, Swing UK and V12 Outdoors.
